NTPC Limited has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) to explore strategic collaboration in the utilisation of coal and lignite resources, marking a significant step toward enhancing India’s energy security and promoting cleaner fuel technologies.
The agreements were signed in the presence of NTPC’s Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh and GMDC’s Managing Director Roopwant Singh, along with senior officials from both organisations.
First MoU to Ensure Reliable Coal Supply
The first MoU focuses on creating a long-term partnership to utilise coal from GMDC’s coal blocks for power generation at NTPC’s existing and upcoming power stations. The collaboration is expected to:
- Ensure a steady and reliable supply of coal
- Support enhanced power generation capacity
- Reduce fuel supply uncertainties
- Improve operational efficiency across NTPC plants
This arrangement is aimed at strengthening NTPC’s fuel security while enabling consistent and sustainable electricity production.
Second MoU to Explore Coal and Lignite Gasification
The second MoU centres on exploring advanced coal and lignite gasification technologies and their downstream commercial applications. The initiative includes:
- Development of pilot projects for coal and lignite gasification
- Utilisation of syngas for industrial use
- Promotion of cleaner and more efficient use of fossil fuels
The move aligns with the government’s push for clean coal technologies as part of a balanced energy transition strategy.
Boost to Energy Self-Reliance and Innovation
Together, the two MoUs are designed to strengthen India’s energy independence by ensuring reliable domestic fuel supply while advancing innovative technologies that reduce environmental impact. The collaboration highlights the role of public sector partnerships in achieving long-term sustainability and energy resilience.
