Indian Aviation

India secured its position as the world’s fifth-largest aviation market in 2024, registering a substantial volume of air passenger traffic. According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association’s World Air Transport Statistics (WATS), the country handled 211 million passengers during the year, surpassing Japan’s tally of 205 million, which had grown by 18.6 per cent on an annual basis. This accomplishment underscores the robust and sustained momentum of India’s civil aviation sector amid a global landscape of evolving travel patterns.

Leading the global ranking, the United States retained its preeminence with 876 million passengers, marking a 5.2 per cent year-on-year increase. China followed in second place with 741 million, marking a strong growth of 18.7 per cent. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Spain claimed the third and fourth positions, respectively, with 261 million and 241 million passengers.

Within India’s domestic network, the Mumbai–Delhi route once again demonstrated its critical importance to national mobility, ranking as the seventh-busiest airport pair globally, with approximately 5.9 million passengers travelling between the two cities in 2024. This corridor remains a backbone of India’s aviation traffic flow, reinforcing its strategic significance in sustaining capacity and network performance.

India’s ascent in global air travel rankings reflects not only a recovery from pandemic-related setbacks but also the strength of its domestic demand and expanding connectivity. Though some industry reports mention handling figures as high as 241 million passengers, the official WATS data affirms the 211 million figure as the validated benchmark for India’s ranking.

Looking ahead, the sustained rise in passenger numbers positions India favorably for continued growth in both domestic and international markets. Expansion plans, infrastructure investments, and policy reforms are likely to become necessary to handle traffic scaling toward historic highs. The government’s ongoing focus on modernising airports, increasing regional connectivity under flagship schemes, and incentivising private participation is expected to provide a further boost to the sector.

Moreover, as India cements its standing among the world’s aviation giants, maintaining stringent safety standards, improving airport infrastructure, and enhancing operational efficiency will be vital to support its evolving market stature. Airlines will need to invest in fleet expansion, fuel-efficient aircraft, and digital solutions to meet the growing demands of passengers while keeping sustainability at the forefront.

The milestone also presents opportunities for India to emerge as a regional aviation hub, connecting major global routes while fostering tourism, trade, and economic integration. With consistent policy support and strategic partnerships, the country has the potential to climb further in the global aviation rankings in the years ahead.

In sum, 2024 marks a defining moment in India’s civil aviation history, as the nation firmly establishes itself within the top five global aviation markets, demonstrating capacity, ambition, and forward momentum in the skies.
