The Central Government has approved a one-year extension in the service of Cabinet Secretary Dr. T.V. Somanathan and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, ensuring continuity in two of the country’s most important administrative positions.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extensions, allowing Dr. Somanathan to continue as Cabinet Secretary beyond August 30, 2026, while Govind Mohan will remain Union Home Secretary until August 22, 2027, or until further orders.
Continuity at the Highest Level of Administration
The decision comes at a time when the government is implementing several key governance reforms, infrastructure projects and national security initiatives. By retaining two experienced officers, the Centre aims to ensure stability in policymaking and administrative coordination.
Govind Mohan’s extension has been approved by relaxing the relevant provisions of the All India Services retirement rules, allowing him to continue beyond his scheduled superannuation.
T.V. Somanathan to Continue as Cabinet Secretary
A 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Dr. T.V. Somanathan took charge as Cabinet Secretary in August 2024 after serving as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat.
Before assuming the country’s top bureaucratic position, he held several important assignments, including Finance Secretary (Department of Expenditure), Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, senior roles in the Prime Minister’s Office, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) in Tamil Nadu, and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited.
During his tenure as Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Somanathan has focused on improving administrative efficiency, accelerating project implementation and strengthening coordination among ministries.
Experienced Administrator with Strong Academic Background
Known for his expertise in public finance and governance, Dr. Somanathan secured All India Rank 2 in the Civil Services Examination.
He holds a Ph.D. in Economics, a master’s degree in Economics, and professional qualifications as a Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant and Company Secretary. He has also completed an executive programme at Harvard Business School and authored several books and research papers on public policy and economics.
Govind Mohan to Continue as Home Secretary
The ACC has also extended the tenure of Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, as Union Home Secretary for another year.
He assumed charge in August 2024 and has since overseen key aspects of internal security, Centre-State coordination and administrative affairs within the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Before becoming Home Secretary, he served in several senior positions, including Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Joint Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat and Principal Resident Commissioner of the Government of Sikkim.
Extensive Experience Across Key Sectors
An engineering graduate from IIT (BHU), Varanasi, and a management postgraduate from IIM Ahmedabad, Govind Mohan has played an important role in several national initiatives, including coordination during the COVID-19 pandemic and implementation of programmes such as Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Har Ghar Tiranga.

His experience in governance and internal security has made him one of the senior-most administrators in the Central Government.

With the extension of both the Cabinet Secretary and the Home Secretary, the Centre has reaffirmed its emphasis on administrative continuity at the highest level.
