PM Modi

In a strong and clear message amid ongoing trade discussions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy producers, and fishermen, even if it comes at a significant personal cost. His remarks came during the inaugural address at a global conference marking the birth centenary of renowned agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan.

The Prime Minister’s comments followed the U.S. decision to impose tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods amid calls for greater access to India’s agricultural and dairy markets. India has resisted these demands, citing the potential impact on domestic livelihoods. “For us, the interests of farmers are of top priority. India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers, and fishermen,” Modi said.

He further added, “I am aware that I may have to pay a heavy personal price, but I am ready to do so to safeguard the interests of our people.” Modi also called for a greater focus on climate-resilient agriculture, including the development of heat-resistant crops to ensure food security in the face of climate change.

The Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and stamp in honour of Dr. Swaminathan and highlighted key government schemes driving holistic growth in the agriculture and allied sectors.
