Chennai: In a landmark development for the Tamil Nadu administration, P. Sumathi has been appointed as Secretary to the Law Department, becoming the first woman officer to hold the position in the state’s history.
The appointment marks a significant milestone in the Law Department and reflects the growing representation of women in senior administrative and legal leadership roles within the government.
Takes Charge After George Alexander’s Retirement
P. Sumathi succeeds S. George Alexander, who retired from service on May 31 after serving as Secretary to the Law Department for the last three years. The appointment was announced through an official government release.
Before taking over the new role, Sumathi was serving as the full-time Member Secretary of the State Law Commission, where she played an important role in legal research, policy recommendations, and law reform initiatives.
Extensive Experience in Legal Administration
With years of experience in legal and administrative matters, Sumathi has been associated with various aspects of governance and legislative processes. Her tenure at the State Law Commission provided her with significant exposure to legal policy formulation and statutory reforms, making her well-equipped to lead the department.
