In a major step towards clean energy expansion, GAIL (India) Limited has approved a 600 MW greenfield solar power project in Uttar Pradesh, significantly strengthening its renewable energy portfolio.
The decision was cleared by the company’s Board of Directors as part of its long-term strategy to diversify beyond natural gas and contribute to India’s low-carbon future.
What makes the project stand out is its integrated battery energy storage system. Along with solar generation, the project will include a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), designed to improve grid stability and ensure efficient use of renewable power. This combination will help address one of the key challenges of solar energy—intermittency.
The project involves a total investment of around ₹3,294.86 crore and is expected to be completed within 15 months from the award of the EPC contract. It will be financed through a mix of debt and equity.
Currently, GAIL operates about 29 MW of solar capacity, which is already fully utilised. With this new project, the company is taking a significant leap in scaling up its renewable energy presence.

Officials say the move reflects a broader shift within public sector enterprises, which are increasingly investing in sustainable and future-ready energy solutions. The addition of battery storage further highlights a focus on modern infrastructure that can support reliable power supply alongside renewable generation.
The project also aligns with India’s national goals of expanding renewable energy capacity while ensuring grid efficiency and stability.
As GAIL moves forward with this initiative, it signals a clear direction—embracing cleaner energy, adopting advanced technologies, and playing a stronger role in shaping India’s energy transition.
