2nd Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit

Kovalam, Kerala:
The 2nd Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit, hosted by the Government of Kerala and Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT), and co-hosted by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Energy Management Centre Kerala (EMC Kerala), with Elets Technomedia as the Knowledge Partner, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, innovators, and energy experts to deliberate on the future of renewable energy and hydrogen in India. The summit served as an important platform for discussions on accelerating the clean energy transition, strengthening energy security, and promoting collaboration between government institutions and the private sector

The event focused on key themes such as scaling renewable energy adoption, building a robust hydrogen ecosystem, strengthening grid resilience, and mobilising investments to support India’s low-carbon development pathway.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Ravi Gupta, CEO, Founder, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Elets Technomedia, emphasised the growing importance of renewable energy for India’s sustainable development and energy security. He noted that renewable energy has become a critical requirement for the country as it seeks to reduce dependence on conventional fuels and address climate challenges. Dr Gupta stressed that meaningful discussions and consistent engagement among stakeholders are necessary to accelerate the transition to clean energy.

In the opening remarks, Shri Rahul Krishna Sharma, IAS, CEO, ANERT, underlined the importance of partnerships in advancing the renewable energy transition. He emphasised that collaboration between government agencies, industry leaders, and innovators is essential to align policy, investment, and technological development. Such cooperation enables large-scale deployment of renewable energy projects and helps bridge the gap between policy and implementation. ANERT continues to focus on creating platforms that facilitate dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, ensuring that policy initiatives translate effectively into real-world outcomes.

Delivering a keynote address, Shri K.R. Jyothilal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Finance & Taxes Department, Government of Kerala, highlighted the immense potential of hydrogen as a clean energy resource. The world currently uses only a small fraction of hydrogen’s total energy potential, roughly 1 unit out of 6000.  He discussed innovative approaches being explored, such as converting wastewater into fresh water for hydrogen production. Such initiatives could support clean energy generation while also addressing water management challenges. He emphasised that hydrogen and renewable energy must remain central to discussions shaping India’s future energy strategy.

Keynote speaker Shri Jitendra Srivastava, IAS, Chairman & Managing Director, REC Ltd, highlighted the role of financial institutions in strengthening power infrastructure and supporting energy development. He noted that REC Limited has partnered with the Government of Kerala to provide financial support across the power value chain. REC has extended approximately ₹2100 crore in assistance to the Kerala State Electricity Board and around ₹2300 crore to support the distribution sector.

The organisation has also financed major infrastructure projects in the state, including Kannur International Airport, with around ₹1100 crore. Additionally, about ₹2000 crore has been extended to the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) to support infrastructure development across Kerala.

In a video address, Shri S. Suhas, IAS, Managing Director, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL), highlighted the airport’s pioneering achievements in renewable energy. Since 2015, CIAL has been recognised as the world’s first fully solar-powered airport, a milestone that has positioned Kerala as a global example of sustainable infrastructure. The initiative helps reduce nearly 66,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, equivalent to planting about three million trees. He also shared that CIAL, in partnership with BPCL, is establishing one of the first green hydrogen fueling stations at the airport, demonstrating how infrastructure projects can contribute to the transition toward cleaner energy solutions.

Speaking at the summit, Shri Neeraj Semwal, IAS, Secretary – Power, Govt. of NCT of Delhi, highlighted the transformation of the energy sector over the past two decades. He noted that the sector has evolved significantly since 2002, driven by increasing energy demand and advancements in technology. Today, the focus is shifting toward greater integration of renewable energy into the power system. Ensuring grid reliability while managing fluctuating renewable energy supply has become a key priority. He emphasised that effective demand management and expanded energy storage solutions will be essential to maintaining a stable and resilient power grid.

Providing industry insights, Shri Motti Thomas, Director of Global Sales, Fluitron, spoke about developments in hydrogen infrastructure. Fluitron specialises in hydrogen refuelling station packages, compressor systems, hydrogen dispensers, and engineering services. The company is contributing to India’s first hydrogen-fuelled train project at Jind Railway Station for Indian Railways, with GreenH Electrolysis as the customer. The project includes compressor systems, storage management, and hydrogen dispensers manufactured in Coimbatore, India.

Key Panel Discussions

The summit hosted several high-level panel discussions covering key aspects of the energy transition, including:

  • From Policy to Projects: Building India’s Green Hydrogen Economy
  • Operating the High-RE Grid: Storage, Flexibility as a Grid Resource
  • Financing Decarbonization: Unlocking Capital for Hard-to-Abate Sectors
  • Green Ports, Industry & Hydrogen Corridors: Building India’s Export-Ready Hubs
  • Power System 2.0: Financially Sustainable DISCOMs and Next-Gen Transmission for a High-Renewables Future
  • Skilling & Innovation for a Net Zero Future

Industry Presentation

The summit also featured an industry presentation titled “India’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Ferry: A Commercial Maritime Decarbonization Solution”, delivered by Shri Vishnudeep Panicker, Senior Manager, Cochin Shipyard Limited. The organisation has successfully demonstrated the design, development, commissioning, and trials of India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell system and hydrogen-powered vessel. With India contributing around 6 per cent of global carbon emissions, such innovations highlight the potential of hydrogen as a clean fuel for the future of transportation.
