Ujjain is set for a major infrastructure and tourism upgrade as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav on Saturday laid the foundation for 15 development projects worth ₹760.78 crore and inaugurated two completed works costing ₹33 crore. The projects are aimed at preparing the holy city for Simhasth 2028, one of the largest religious congregations in the country.
The initiatives focus on improving urban infrastructure, pilgrim facilities, road connectivity and civic amenities, with the objective of ensuring smooth arrangements for millions of devotees expected to visit Ujjain during the Simhasth.
Focus on Religious and Spiritual Tourism
A key highlight of the development package is the construction of Shani Lok at an estimated cost of ₹140 crore. In addition, infrastructure works are underway at Mangalnath and other prominent religious sites in and around the city. The Chief Minister said these projects will enhance facilities for pilgrims while strengthening Ujjain’s position as a major centre of spiritual tourism.
Major Infrastructure Projects Launched
Among the prominent projects for which foundation stones were laid are the six-lane Harifatak Railway Overbridge, estimated at ₹371.11 crore, and a series of urban development works valued at ₹389.67 crore. The government also announced the construction of 836 police residential units costing ₹232.73 crore and a new sports complex with an outlay of ₹36 crore.
To improve access to the city, highways leading to Ujjain will be widened to four or six lanes where required, helping manage the expected surge in traffic during major religious events.
Improved Facilities for Pilgrims
Chief Minister Yadav said arrangements are being made to allow devotees to bathe in the Kshipra river throughout the year. Around 30 kilometres of new ghats are being developed to accommodate large gatherings during Simhasth and other festivals. Plans are also in place for a new township with markets, bus terminals and supporting infrastructure to better manage the city’s growing population and tourist inflow.
Urban Development and Modern Amenities
Beyond religious infrastructure, the government is also investing in Ujjain’s long-term urban growth. Projects such as Medicity, Metro City, Science City and an IT Park are being developed to modernise the city and improve the quality of civic services for residents.

State’s Growth Outlook
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yadav said Madhya Pradesh has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in the country, with efforts focused on employment generation and inclusive development. He added that the government remains committed to balanced growth, ensuring that benefits reach farmers, youth, women and disadvantaged sections of society.
The large-scale investments in Ujjain are expected to significantly enhance the city’s infrastructure and readiness ahead of Simhasth 2028, while also supporting long-term urban and economic development.
