Himanta Biswa Sarma

In a major push toward clean energy and sustainability, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated the 70 MW Dhubri Solar Power Project, developed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL). The project is Assam’s first large-scale solar power initiative and a significant milestone for renewable energy development in the North Eastern region.

Located at Khudigaon Pt-II in Dhubri district, the solar plant is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Assam’s power supply while reducing the state’s dependence on conventional energy sources.

Project Details and Capacity

The solar facility has been developed on 330 acres of land leased from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for a period of 28 years. The project was awarded to SGEL in February 2023 through a competitive bidding process at a tariff of ₹3.92 per unit, with an estimated engineering and construction cost of ₹367.44 crore.

With a capacity utilisation factor of 23 percent, the plant is projected to generate around 141.13 million units of electricity in its first year. Over its operational life of 25 years, it is expected to produce approximately 3,230 million units of clean energy.

The project will also have a positive environmental impact, helping reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 1.58 lakh tonnes, supporting India’s national climate goals.

Boost to Assam’s Renewable Energy Vision

The Dhubri solar project marks a major step forward in Assam’s renewable energy transition. It is also the first operational project of SJVN in the North Eastern Region, making it strategically important for both the state and the company.

The foundation stone for the plant was virtually laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024, reflecting the importance of the project in India’s broader renewable energy roadmap.

Economic and Employment Benefits

Beyond clean energy generation, the project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities during construction, operations, and maintenance phases.

Officials said the plant will also help improve the reliability of power supply in the region, supporting industrial growth and economic development in Assam.
