In a major milestone for Indian Railways, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off India’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train on the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route, marking a significant upgrade in long-distance rail travel. The launch took place from Malda Town Railway Station in West Bengal, a state heading towards assembly elections next year.
The Prime Minister also virtually flagged off the return service from Guwahati to Howrah, formally inaugurating the country’s first semi-high-speed sleeper train service designed for overnight journeys.
Faster, More Comfortable Travel Experience
The new Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is expected to reduce travel time between Howrah and Guwahati by nearly 2.5 hours, offering passengers a faster, safer, and more comfortable alternative to conventional long-distance trains.
According to a government statement, the fully air-conditioned sleeper train is designed to provide an “airline-like travel experience at economical fares.” Equipped with modern amenities, improved safety features, and enhanced passenger comfort, the train represents a new generation of rail services tailored to the needs of contemporary India.
Railway officials said the introduction of sleeper variants of Vande Bharat trains will gradually transform long-distance rail travel, making it more efficient and passenger-friendly.
Major Rail and Road Projects Also Unveiled
During the day, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to dedicate and lay the foundation stones for multiple rail and road infrastructure projects worth ₹3,250 crore. These projects are aimed at strengthening connectivity, modernising railway infrastructure, and improving passenger services across eastern India.
The Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to the region, focusing on infrastructure development and public outreach ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Focus on Railway Development in West Bengal
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who arrived in West Bengal on Friday to oversee preparations, said the Centre is investing heavily in upgrading the state’s railway network.
He informed that under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, as many as 101 railway stations in West Bengal are being redeveloped, with modern passenger facilities and upgraded infrastructure.
“Prime Minister Modi has allocated nearly ₹13,000 crore for railway development in West Bengal, reflecting the government’s commitment to transforming rail services in the state,” Vaishnaw told reporters.
A New Chapter in Indian Rail Travel
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is being seen as a landmark moment for Indian Railways. With its blend of speed, comfort, and affordability, the service is expected to set a new benchmark for overnight train travel in the country.
Officials believe this is just the beginning, with more Vande Bharat Sleeper routes likely to be rolled out across key long-distance corridors in the coming years.
