Dr Rakesh Gupta Appointed Director General of National AIDS Control Organisation and Additional Secretary, Health Ministry

In a significant leadership appointment, Dr Rakesh Gupta has assumed charge as the new Director General of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Dr Gupta shared the development, expressing his commitment to strengthening India’s public health systems and continuing the country’s focused efforts in combating HIV/AIDS. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading the national HIV/AIDS programme and overseeing key public health functions, including disease surveillance, pandemic preparedness, and disaster management response.

With extensive experience in public health administration, Dr Gupta’s appointment comes at a crucial time when India is focusing on strengthening its healthcare infrastructure and improving preparedness for emerging health challenges. His responsibilities will include guiding national strategies for prevention, treatment, and awareness related to HIV/AIDS, while also ensuring effective coordination between various central and state-level health agencies.

The National AIDS Control Organisation plays a pivotal role in India’s efforts to control and eliminate HIV/AIDS. Under Dr Gupta’s leadership, the organisation is expected to further enhance its outreach programmes, improve access to treatment, and accelerate progress toward national and global health targets.

Apart from HIV/AIDS control, Dr Gupta will also be actively involved in shaping policies related to public health surveillance systems and emergency response mechanisms. These areas have gained increasing importance in the post-pandemic world, where robust preparedness and rapid response capabilities are essential.
