Madhu Sankunny Nair

The Government of India has approved an extension of the tenure of Madhu Sankunny Nair as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), sources said on Monday. The decision allows Nair to continue leading the public sector shipbuilding company for a further period.

Madhu Sankunny Nair has been heading Cochin Shipyard, one of India’s largest shipbuilding and repair yards, where he has overseen key projects and strategic initiatives aimed at expanding vessel construction capacity and enhancing operational performance.

Officials said the tenure extension reflects confidence in his leadership as CSL navigates significant order pipelines, modernisation plans and efforts to strengthen its competitive position in both defence and commercial shipbuilding sectors.

CSL has been involved in constructing a range of vessels, including those for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and commercial clients, and has been steadily building capabilities in advanced maritime technologies. Under Nair’s leadership, the shipyard has pursued capacity expansion, quality improvements and timely execution of major contracts.

An official familiar with the approval said, “Extending the CMD’s tenure will help maintain continuity in strategic execution and support ongoing initiatives at the shipyard.”
