Hyderabad, May 13, 2025: In a significant administrative development, the Government of Telangana has appointed senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Sandeep Kumar Sultania as the new Finance Secretary of the state. The official orders confirming his appointment were issued by the Telangana State Government on Monday, May 12.
A 1998 batch IAS officer, Sandeep Kumar Sultania steps into this crucial role, succeeding K. Ramakrishna Rao, a 1991 batch officer who recently assumed the position of Chief Secretary of the state. Rao was elevated to the top bureaucratic post on April 30, following the retirement of his predecessor, Ms. A. Santhi Kumari.
Until this latest reshuffle, Ramakrishna Rao had held the Finance portfolio for nearly a decade, steering Telangana through significant fiscal policy decisions and budgetary exercises. Despite being appointed Chief Secretary, he had continued to hold the additional charge of Finance Secretary. However, the government has now decided to relieve him of these dual responsibilities within two weeks of his elevation.
Sultania’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Telangana’s fiscal landscape. The state is reportedly grappling with revenue shortfalls and budgetary pressures, prompting the administration to explore unconventional resource mobilisation strategies, including the monetisation of state-owned assets. As Finance Secretary, Sultania will be responsible for addressing these challenges, ensuring fiscal discipline, and supporting sustainable economic planning for the state.
In addition to his new role, Sultania will continue to hold full additional charge as Principal Secretary for both the Planning Department and the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department. This continuation indicates the government’s confidence in his administrative capabilities and his ability to multitask effectively across key departments.
Throughout his career, Sultania has held several critical positions in the state bureaucracy, including as Secretary of the Sports and Youth Services Department. Known for his efficient governance and commitment to public service, he is expected to bring a structured and pragmatic approach to the finance department.

The government’s decision to entrust Sultania with the finance portfolio underscores the urgent need for strong leadership in steering Telangana’s economic planning amid fiscal challenges. His vast administrative experience, coupled with a reputation for effective policy implementation, makes him a suitable candidate to navigate the state’s complex financial environment.
