IWAI

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), operating under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has inaugurated its new regional office at Transport Bhawan in Srinagar. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen inland water transport (IWT) infrastructure in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

With support from the Jammu and Kashmir administration, the newly operational office will serve as a focal point for all IWAI-related activities and initiatives in the region. The establishment of this office is part of a broader strategy to harness the potential of river-based transport and contribute to the economic and ecological development of the area.

To further this agenda, IWAI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Jammu and Kashmir to facilitate the development of three national waterways — NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi). This collaboration is poised to significantly enhance inland navigation infrastructure and foster sustainable connectivity across the region.

Under the framework of the MoU, the Authority will implement several key development activities. These include the installation of floating jetties at ten critical locations throughout Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, efforts will be made to establish navigational fairways through selective dredging, deploy night navigation aids, and conduct regular hydrographic surveys. These measures aim to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels along these waterways.

The project also aligns with broader national objectives of promoting green transport, easing congestion on road networks, and reducing carbon emissions. River navigation presents an eco-friendly alternative that can contribute to both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

This initiative complements the nationwide vision of leveraging the country’s extensive river systems as engines of growth. By enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the project aims to unlock new opportunities in tourism, trade, and employment, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

The collaboration between IWAI and the Jammu and Kashmir administration is expected to stimulate local economies, boost eco-tourism, and provide residents with improved access to goods and services through water-based logistics. It represents a forward-looking step in reimagining transportation infrastructure in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

As inland waterways gain renewed focus under national development programs, the Srinagar office of IWAI will play a crucial role in facilitating the timely execution and coordination of projects in the Union Territory. The initiative stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and regional development.
