India has taken a significant stride in the global semiconductor industry by inaugurating its first 3-nanometer (3nm) chip design centres in Noida and Bengaluru. These state-of-the-art facilities, developed by Renesas Electronics India Private Limited, were inaugurated by the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, who described the milestone as a major advancement in India’s journey toward becoming a global semiconductor leader.
The 3nm chip design capability represents a technological breakthrough, placing India among a select group of countries with such advanced capabilities. This development follows India’s prior progress in 7nm and 5nm technologies, marking a transition into the next phase of chip innovation. The design centres are expected to bolster the country’s semiconductor design capabilities and attract further investments in the ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted the government’s comprehensive semiconductor strategy, which includes design, fabrication, Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) and support infrastructure for equipment, chemicals, and gas supply chains. He referenced growing global confidence in India’s semiconductor potential, as evidenced by participation in international forums like Davos, and acknowledged the substantial investments from industry leaders such as Applied Materials and Lam Research.
To strengthen the foundation of this ecosystem, the Minister announced the rollout of a semiconductor learning kit aimed at engineering students to enhance practical hardware skills. More than 270 academic institutions, which have already received Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software tools through the India Semiconductor Mission, will now also receive these learning kits. This initiative is expected to help create industry-ready talent capable of supporting India’s expanding semiconductor sector.
The Minister also commended the teams at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for their effective implementation of key initiatives. He reiterated the government’s focus on building a resilient, inclusive, and innovation-driven semiconductor ecosystem under the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
