
In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, the Environment Directorate of the Uttar Pradesh government has partnered with the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability, and Technology (iFOREST). The two entities signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement strategic solutions for key environmental concerns, including air pollution, waste management, and climate change.

The agreement, formalized at the Environment Directorate office, marks a three-year collaboration that will promote green industries and the development of sustainable cities across the state. The signing event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Dr Arun Kumar Saxena, Minister of State K.P. Malik, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, and other senior officials.

Under this partnership, iFOREST will undertake research-based studies, facilitate capacity-building programs, and support the implementation of government schemes dedicated to environmental conservation. The initiative will also focus on promoting clean energy, sustainable industrial practices, and eco-friendly urban planning.

A unique aspect of this collaboration is the engagement of religious institutions in environmental conservation efforts. The initiative commenced during the Maha Kumbh 2025 through the “Kumbh Ki Aastha and Climate Change” conference, an event jointly organized by the Environment Directorate and iFOREST to highlight the intersection of faith and sustainability.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Arun Kumar Saxena underscored the urgency of tackling Uttar Pradesh’s environmental challenges. “Our state faces multifaceted ecological issues that demand comprehensive and innovative solutions. The government has been actively working towards improving air quality, reducing industrial emissions, and encouraging the use of renewable energy. This partnership will enable us to explore advanced technologies and strategies for combating pollution and climate change,” he stated.
Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh emphasized the significance of research-driven policymaking in addressing environmental concerns. “Scientific advancements and data-driven approaches are crucial for finding effective solutions to challenges such as air pollution, waste management, and water conservation. This MoU will provide a strong foundation for evidence-based decision-making and implementation,” he noted.
Principal Secretary Anil Kumar highlighted the broader impact of the partnership, particularly in air quality management and the development of resilient urban centres He stated that iFOREST’s technical expertise would be instrumental in conducting pilot projects, training stakeholders, and supporting research efforts aimed at enhancing environmental management across Uttar Pradesh.
Dr Chandra Bhushan, CEO of iFOREST, reiterated the organization’s commitment to sustainable development, expressing optimism about the transformative potential of the collaboration.

Its core objectives include formulating policies to curb air and water pollution, enhancing community resilience to climate impacts, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
