The Delhi assembly elections will be conducted in a single phase on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8, as announced by the Election Commission today. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, accompanied by senior poll officials, unveiled the schedule during a press conference.

The term of the current 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly concludes on February 23, necessitating elections to form a new House. The national capital has a history of conducting assembly polls in a single phase.

In the political arena, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, is striving for a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the BJP is ramping up efforts to challenge AAP’s dominance. The Congress, contesting independently, aims to counter both the BJP and AAP, a shift from its alliance with AAP during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

During the announcement, Rajiv Kumar highlighted India’s impending milestone of one billion voters, stating, “Electoral rolls were released yesterday. We are crossing 99 crore voters… We are going to be a nation of one billion voters very soon, which will be another record in voting.”

Kumar also noted that 2024 marked a significant year globally, with two-thirds of the world’s population in democracies participating in various elections.
