Justice Sanjiv Khanna

Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India and will take his oath on November 11, following the retirement of incumbent Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who demits office on November 10 upon reaching the age of 65. The Centre officially notified the appointment on Thursday through a gazette, setting the transition into effect from November 11.

Justice DY Chandrachud, who assumed office as the CJI on November 8, 2022, will step down after a tenure marked by significant judicial contributions. Justice Khanna is expected to serve as CJI for a term lasting slightly over six months, concluding his tenure on May 13, 2025.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal posted on X, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024.”
