Green Hydrogen Hubs

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has rolled out guidelines aimed at fostering the establishment of Green Hydrogen hubs across the country. These hubs, supported under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, will receive financial backing from the ministry for the creation of essential infrastructure catering to common services and facilities.

As the guidelines document outlines, the scheme seeks to pinpoint and cultivate two regions capable of facilitating large-scale production and utilization of Hydrogen. “This initiative focuses on bolstering the supporting infrastructure crucial for the advancement of Green Hydrogen hubs. The strategic planning of these hubs and associated infrastructure aims at fostering integrated regional development” stated the guidelines.

With a target to establish a minimum of two Green Hydrogen hubs by FY2025-26, the scheme aims to develop these hubs in an integrated manner, facilitating resource pooling and scalability. The ultimate goal is to enhance the cost-competitiveness of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives, encourage widespread utilization and export, and improve the viability of assets across the entire value chain.

MNRE, along with its nominated Scheme Implementation Agencies (SIA), will spearhead the implementation of these hydrogen hubs, emphasizing the holistic development approach. The scheme comes with a budgetary allocation of Rs 200 crore, exclusively for developing core infrastructure for common services and facilities.

The MNRE underlines that the envisaged Hydrogen hubs should boast a planned capacity of at least 1,00,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), with higher production capacities receiving precedence. “Pooling resources from various stakeholders, including the government and industry, is anticipated to foster the coordinated development of the Hydrogen ecosystem,” highlighted MNRE.

In related developments, NGEL has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RVUNL for the development of renewable energy and Green Hydrogen projects, further underlining the growing momentum in this sector.
