Harshika Singh

In a recent administrative shuffle in Madhya Pradesh, Harshika Singh, who previously served as the Commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation, has been appointed as the Director of the Skill Development Department.

Having garnered recognition for her adept handling of administrative responsibilities, Harshika Singh, a 2012 batch IAS officer, boasts a distinguished career. She originally hails from Ranchi and she holds qualifications from the prestigious London School of Economics.

During her time as the Collector of Mandla, Harshika Singh made a remarkable contribution in raising the district’s literacy rate to full capacity, earning accolades from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also served as CEO of the District Panchayat Tikamgarh.

As a collector in the Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh, She encountered high illiteracy and imbalanced sex ratios across the district. In 2019, she initiated Mahila Gyanalaya Vidyalaya (All-Women Schools), opening 35 schools district-wide for dropout girls and illiterate women. “The cause of all the problems is the lack of education in the district. Due to the deep-rooted nature of patriarchy, women here who are older than 30 are not even allowed to speak, let alone go out of the house for schooling,” Singh told media.

The initiative increased the enrollment ratio of girls and women including elderly learners eager to learn the basics. Her efforts to bring positive change in the lives of illiterate women got recognition and appreciation from the state government also.
