Union Budget 2024

Presenting the 2024 interim budget, the Union Finance Minister outlined crucial initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable energy and electric mobility in India. Among the key announcements is the ambitious plan to solarize 10 million households through the installation of rooftop solar plants. This initiative follows the recent launch of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, designed to reduce electricity costs for lower and middle-income households while bolstering India’s energy self-reliance. The Finance Minister highlighted that households stand to save between Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000 annually by selling surplus power to distribution companies.

Additionally, the Finance Minister greenlit viability gap funding (VGF) for offshore wind projects totaling 1,000 MW, aiming to harness the immense potential of offshore wind energy. This financial support is expected to expedite the development of offshore wind projects, aligning with India’s renewable energy objectives.

The government also pledged to fortify and expand the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem by extending support for manufacturing and charging infrastructure. Priority will be given to promoting the increased adoption of electric buses in public transportation networks, facilitated by a robust payment security mechanism. This initiative seeks to enhance public transportation systems, fostering a more sustainable and eco-friendly urban mobility landscape.

Furthermore, a significant stride toward sustainable fuel sources involves mandating the blending of compressed biogas with compressed natural gas and piped natural gas for transportation purposes. This move underscores the government’s commitment to promoting cleaner and greener alternatives in the transportation sector. Additionally, the government plans to introduce a Biomanufacturing and Bio Foundry program, aimed at providing environmentally friendly alternatives for producing biodegradable materials.

The budget revisions also include adjustments in the allocations for various programs. Notably, there is an increase in funding for on-grid solar power, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, and the green energy corridor. However, there’s a decrease in the budget estimate allocation for on-grid wind power and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle in India program.
