Tesla is poised to commence operations in India, establishing its manufacturing plant in Gujarat next year. Media reports suggest that negotiations for the EV maker’s inaugural manufacturing facility in India are in the final stages and are anticipated to wrap up soon. The official announcement regarding Tesla’s manufacturing unit in the state is expected to be made during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2024, as per Ahmedabad Mirror’s report.
Anticipation is building for a potential announcement during the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled for January 2024, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk expected to be in attendance for the auspicious occasion.

Gujarat’s advantageous business environment and strategic geographical location are cited as key factors positioning the state as the favored destination for Tesla’s ambitious manufacturing endeavors, according to the report. Jan Mishra, the author of the report, highlighted the state government’s proposal of several potential locations, including Sanand, Dholera, and Becharaji, for the establishment of Tesla’s manufacturing facility. This aligns with Tesla’s overarching goal of meeting both domestic and international demands, including exports, from its manufacturing base in India.

Rumors surrounding Tesla’s entry into the Indian market have been circulating for some time, with ongoing discussions between the company and the Indian government regarding concessions and regulatory considerations.
While the official government stance asserts no subsidies for imported EVs, recent reports suggest a potential breakthrough for Tesla. The electric automaker might be granted the ability to import fully-built cars at a concessional import duty ranging between 15-20 percent, marking a significant reduction from the existing 100 percent duty on such imports.
However, this potential concession is contingent upon Tesla establishing a manufacturing presence within India. Failure to meet this condition could lead to the revocation of duty benefits, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations between Tesla and the Indian government.
