In a major move, the Union Cabinet nodded to a proposal to merge the three municipal corporations of Delhi (MCDs), on Tuesday, March 22. The approval came nine days after the Centre informed the Delhi State Election Commission. As a result, the panel is eyeing to postpone the release of the schedule for the civic polls slated to be held in the coming month.

As per sources, the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2022, is likely to be presented in Parliament in the coming week.

The Union government’s sudden decision has sparked a war of words between the Bhartiya Janata Party ruling at the Centre and the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party in the national capital.
