Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of State (IC) for Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) announced Swachh Survekshan 2020 awards on August 20. Its the fourth time in a row that Indore was adjudged India’s cleanest city under cleanliness survey. The minister announced the results and awards at ‘Swachh Mahotsav’ event in Delhi.

Puri congratulated Indore with a tweet that said, “Heartiest congratulations! Indore is India’s cleanest city for 4th year in a row. The city & its people have shown exemplary dedication towards cleanliness. Congratulations to MP CM @ChouhanShivraj people, political leadership & Municipal Corporation for this superlative performance.”

Further, the survey results rated Surat as the second cleanest city in India, whereas, Navi Mumbai won the award for the country’s third cleanest city. Puri also extended his best wishes to the Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and municipal corporation for Surat winning the award for second cleanest city in India.


However, the Jalandhar Cantonment won the Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2020 award for being India’s cleanest Cantonment area. Moreover, Varanasi was declared as the cleanest town on the banks of river Ganga.

The top 20 cities as per the latest Swachh Survekshan 2020 are – Indore rank one, Surat stood second, Navi Mumbai third, Vijayawada, Ahmedabad and Rajkot followed securing fourth, fifth and sixth ranks respectively. Bhopal secured the seventh position whereas Chandigarh stood eighth in the list. GVMC Vishakhapatnam was rated ninth and Vadodara secured 10th position. Nashik 11th, Lucknow 12th, Gwalior 13th, Pune 14th, Thane 15th, Agra 16th, Jabalpur 17th, Nagpur 18th, Ghaziabad 19th and the 20th spot was taken by Prayagraj.

Swachh Survekshan is the world’s largest cleanliness survey wherein 4,242 cities are covered and the feedback from over 1.9 crore citizens have been taken.
