Prakash Javdekar launches ‘Nagar Van’ to enhance urban green cover

On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar launched Nagar Van for Urban Forests with 200 corporations across India in a virtual event on the occasion themed – Nature and Biodiversity. The minister, during the launch, urged the people to actively participate and increase the tree cover in their areas.

Prakash said, “Urban forests will work as urban lungs. I appeal to people to work together and make it a people’s movement. We will reward people who participate and make it a success. Plant trees and increase their number as they are oxygen tanks.”

During the virtual event, the minister showcased the example of Warje, Pune where the forest land within the city after urbanisation was developed into a ‘Nagar Van’.

Babul Supriyo, Minister of State for Environment, was also present at the occasion. Supriyo said that the government has set a target of planting 145 crore trees this year. “Tree plantation is of great significance. We have a target of planting 145 crore trees this year. It is needed that we pledge to protect forests and use natural resources wisely”, he added.
