Speaking to the press on June 26, G Prakash, Commissioner, Greater Chennai Commissioner said that the civic body has sent 2,300 outreach workers to contain the spread of Coronavirus in city slums.
Chennai has not reported any major rise in cases in the last 45 days due to the community intervention programme. Every outreach worker had to cover 300 houses each day. Also, we doubled the number of outreach workers, Prakash told the press.
Adding on he said that there are 26 lakh residents in the slums who do not have resources to control the pandemic and outreach workers are creating awareness. Moreover, a total of 92 NGOs have been roped in. The spread will be controlled.

Prakash, on testing, said that the GCC has intensified testing in all 15 city zones. The number of daily tests has increased from 5,000 to 10,000. This includes the private sector. The Corporation has increased the number of daily tests from 1,500 to 5,000.
At present, Chennai has 17,500 beds in COVID-19 Care Centres and 4,350 patients have been admitted. The centre at IIT-Madras would have 1,200 beds, where currently 400 beds are prepared.
