DoT to allocate additional data to meet growing demands amid Work from Home

The nationwide lockdown caused due to coronavirus outbreak has increased the data consumption leading to the growing demands of services from the telecom operators. As per the industry sources, following the request from telecom operators for allocation of additional spectrum to fulfil the growing need of people amid the lockdown, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India has asked the telecom operators to submit their requirement for additional spectrum to the Wireless Planning Commission.

Rajan S Mathews, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said that the industry has requested local authorities across the country to allow the use of sealed mobile towers so that network load can be distributed and can be handled to support work from home during the lockdown period. Nearly 100 percent hike has been observed in some circles post the nationwide lockdown.

Anand Agarwal, CEO, Sterlite Technologies Group, “Covid-19 outbreak has resulted in a significant upsurge in data consumption across the world. In India, a high workforce remotely working from home using video collaboration tools is stressing the current network bandwidth. Indian telcos are experiencing anywhere between 30-100 per cent increase in traffic for different circles.”

In a bid to smoothen the services and ease the load on communication infrastructure, the  COAI has urged the consumers to use data networks responsibly and when required. Telcos are working for developing innovative solutions like virtual radio access network to ease network congestion as the network locations have shifted to homes, added Agarwal.
