South Africa is planning to switch all Government departments over to open source computer software instead of Microsoft systems. The cabinet will use the open source Linux operating system to enhance local IT skills.

The open source software will bridge the digital divide and facilitate people who are computer illiterate. The Government has also joined other governments, including Brazil, China, Spain, India and Malaysia to adopt open source software. Government is taking open source software as a initiative step to develop and use of software in the country. This initiative will help schools, homes and community centres.
