In a significant development that underscores the growing energy cooperation between India and Sri Lanka, both nations have signed a crucial agreement to boost power generation and enhance energy security in the South Asian region. The agreement, signed on 20 August 2024, marks a new chapter in the bilateral relationship, with the potential to impact the region’s energy landscape.
The landmark agreement was signed between India’s Ministry of Power and Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Power and Energy, focusing on the development of new power generation projects. These projects include renewable and conventional energy sources, particularly solar and wind. The initiative aims to support sustainable development and tackle Sri Lanka’s energy challenges, which are marked by energy shortages and a heavy dependence on imported fossil fuels.
India, with its expertise in renewable energy, will play a pivotal role in developing and financing these projects. The agreement includes construction of a 500 MW solar power plant and a 300 MW wind power project in Kerawalapitiya, North Colombo. These projects are expected to not only provide a reliable source of energy but also create employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy. The Indian government has committed to providing technical assistance, including the transfer of advanced technology, to ensure the success of these ventures.

Contributing to the expanding energy landscape, Petronet LNG, a prominent Indian energy company, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sri Lanka’s LTL Holdings for the supply of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This partnership seeks to create a long-term and dependable LNG supply chain, bolstering Sri Lanka’s energy security. The collaboration is anticipated to decrease the country’s reliance on oil imports, diversify its energy portfolio, and facilitate its shift towards cleaner energy sources.

The agreement is part of India’s broader strategy to strengthen ties with its neighbours and assert its influence in the Indian Ocean region. For Sri Lanka, the partnership with India offers a pathway to stabilise its energy sector and reduce its carbon footprint.
The energy agreement comes as both nations seek to strengthen their strategic and economic ties, particularly in the context of regional stability and cooperation. The projects are poised to benefit both countries, leading to a mutual dependency that could lead to further collaborations in the future.
The agreement between India and Sri Lanka represents a major step forward in regional energy cooperation. It has the potential to transform Sri Lanka’s energy landscape while enhancing India’s role as a key player in the region’s energy market. These initiatives are not just about power generation; they represent a shared commitment to sustainable development and regional stability.
