NDMC plans to begin drive-in vaccination for COVID at its parking lots

In light of surging COVID cases in the national capital, Delhi, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has decided to initiate drive-in vaccination centres in its parking lots. The NDMC took inspiration from the successful move by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) vaccination centre at a multi-level parking site in Dadar.

Such a move, if implemented, will speed up the vaccination in Delhi. Also, it will benefit thousands of aged people and those who are differently-abled to get the jabs safely and conveniently. Considering multi-level car parks, there are over 20 such facilities under the NDMC in Delhi’s Hauz Khas, Connaught Place, Munirka, Rajouri Garden, Jangpura, Model Town, Chandni Chowk areas. The NDMC also manages surface parking lots.

As reported by a national daily, to seek permission on the drive-in vaccination move the civic body is going to write to the Government of Delhi. Once the plan gets a ‘go ahead’ the civic body will start operating these centres wherein people can get vaccinated while sitting in their cars.

As per the NDMC Mayor, Jai Prakash, the civic body is planning to begin the drive at multilevel parking lots and then it will expand services to the surface-level parking sites as well. Following the green signal from the Government of Delhi and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, the civic body will be able to implement the plan.
