The Haryana government has approached the Centre seeking a second one-year extension in the tenure of Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi. If approved, the senior IAS officer will continue as the state’s top bureaucrat until June 2027.
Rastogi, a 1990-batch IAS officer of the Haryana cadre, is currently serving on an extended tenure that is scheduled to end on June 30, 2026.
State Government Seeks Continuity in Leadership
According to government sources, Haryana has requested the Central Government to extend Rastogi’s tenure by another year. The proposal is now awaiting approval from the Centre.
If the extension is cleared, Rastogi will continue to lead the state’s administrative machinery and oversee the implementation of key government policies and development programmes.
Appointed Chief Secretary Amid Administrative Transition
Anurag Rastogi first took charge as Haryana’s Chief Secretary on October 31, 2024, on an interim basis after then-designated Chief Secretary Dr. Vivek Joshi required time to return from central deputation.

The interim arrangement lasted only a few days. Later, when Dr. Vivek Joshi was appointed as an Election Commissioner in February 2025, the Haryana government appointed Rastogi as the full-time Chief Secretary.
Extension Granted After Retirement
Rastogi attained the age of superannuation on June 30, 2025. Considering administrative requirements, the government granted him a one-year extension, allowing him to continue as Chief Secretary until June 30, 2026.
The latest proposal seeks to extend his tenure for another year, ensuring continuity in the state’s top administrative post.
Seniority Debate During Appointment
Rastogi’s appointment as Chief Secretary had attracted attention as he was selected over his batchmates, Sudhir Rajpal and Sumita Misra, both 1990-batch IAS officers of the Haryana cadre.
Both officers were placed above him in the state’s IAS gradation list. However, the government chose Rastogi to head the state bureaucracy, citing administrative considerations.
Key Role as Chief Secretary
As Chief Secretary, Rastogi heads the state civil administration and serves as the principal advisor to the government on administrative matters. The office plays a crucial role in coordinating government departments, monitoring policy implementation, and ensuring efficient governance.
