Dr Krishna Gupta

The West Bengal Government has appointed senior IAS officer Dr Krishna Gupta as the next State Election Commissioner (SEC). A 1991-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the West Bengal cadre, Dr Gupta is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary, Co-operation Department, Government of West Bengal.


He will assume charge as the State Election Commissioner after retiring from government service on June 30, 2026. The appointment has been made under Article 243K(1) of the Constitution and the provisions of the West Bengal State Election Commission Act, 1994.

Senior Bureaucrat to Head State Election Commission


With decades of administrative experience, Dr Krishna Gupta has served in several key positions in the West Bengal government. As Additional Chief Secretary in the Co-operation Department, he has been associated with policy formulation and the implementation of programmes aimed at strengthening the cooperative sector in the state.

His appointment to the constitutional post of State Election Commissioner reflects the government’s decision to entrust the responsibility to an experienced administrator.


Constitutional Responsibility

The State Election Commission is an independent constitutional body responsible for conducting elections to Panchayats, Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and other Urban Local Bodies across West Bengal.

As State Election Commissioner, Dr Gupta will oversee the planning, supervision and conduct of local body elections while ensuring that the electoral process is carried out in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Appointment Under Constitutional Provisions

The appointment has been made under Article 243K(1) of the Constitution of India, read with the provisions of the West Bengal State Election Commission Act, 1994.

The constitutional framework empowers the State Election Commission to independently administer elections to local self-government institutions, making the office one of the most significant constitutional positions in state governance.

Focus on Strengthening Local Governance

With Dr Krishna Gupta set to take charge after his superannuation, the State Election Commission is expected to continue its role in ensuring timely and transparent elections for grassroots democratic institutions.

His administrative experience is expected to contribute to the efficient functioning of the Commission and the effective conduct of future local body elections across the state.
