Senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), succeeding Tapan Kumar Deka. The Appointments Committee has approved his appointment for a tenure of two years, entrusting him with the leadership of India’s premier internal intelligence agency.


A 1993-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Dixit is currently serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau. His appointment comes at a crucial time as the agency continues to address evolving internal security challenges and strengthen intelligence coordination across the country.

Experienced Intelligence Officer to Lead IB


Mahesh Dixit has spent a significant part of his career in the Intelligence Bureau, handling several critical assignments related to national security and intelligence operations.


One of his most important postings was as the head of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Srinagar, where he supervised intelligence operations across Jammu & Kashmir and Leh. During his tenure, he played an important role in monitoring the security situation and supporting efforts to maintain stability in the region following the abrogation of Article 370.

His extensive field experience and deep understanding of internal security have earned him a reputation as a seasoned intelligence professional.

Succeeds Tapan Kumar Deka

Dixit will take over from Tapan Kumar Deka, who has been serving as Director of the Intelligence Bureau.

Under Deka’s leadership, the agency focused on strengthening counter-terrorism efforts, intelligence gathering, and coordination among central and state security agencies. With Dixit’s appointment, the government has opted for an experienced officer from within the organisation to ensure continuity in the agency’s functioning.

Strong Background in Internal Security

Over the years, Mahesh Dixit has handled several sensitive assignments within the Intelligence Bureau. His experience spans counter-terrorism, intelligence collection, security assessments and coordination with multiple law enforcement agencies.

Officials believe his operational experience, particularly in conflict-sensitive regions, will help the Intelligence Bureau address emerging security challenges and further strengthen India’s internal security framework.

Focus on National Security
