Kochi: The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together global policymakers, energy experts, diplomats, and industry leaders to discuss emerging opportunities in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and international cooperation. During the summit, Gerard Mestrallet, Special Envoy of the French President for the IMEC, highlighted the strategic significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in reshaping global connectivity and accelerating clean energy collaboration.
Addressing the gathering, Mestrallet described the corridor as one of the most ambitious international connectivity initiatives aimed at strengthening trade, logistics, energy integration, and digital infrastructure between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
He noted that the proposed corridor is expected to connect regions representing a significant share of global economic activity and population, positioning it as a transformative platform for international trade and strategic cooperation.
Multi-Regional Connectivity Framework
Speaking on the structure of the corridor, Mestrallet explained that the initiative combines maritime and land-based connectivity routes linking India with the Arabian Peninsula and onward to Europe. The corridor is expected to integrate transport infrastructure, logistics systems, energy networks, and digital connectivity to create a modern transcontinental trade ecosystem.
He also highlighted the strategic role of key global ports and digital infrastructure hubs in enabling the project’s long-term success. Enhanced connectivity through ports, submarine cable networks, and integrated logistics systems is expected to improve trade efficiency and strengthen economic ties among participating regions.
Focus on Green Energy and Sustainable Infrastructure
A major focus of the corridor, according to Mestrallet, is its emphasis on sustainability and clean energy integration. The IMEC initiative is expected to incorporate green hydrogen infrastructure, high-voltage power connectivity, and digital communication systems, aligning economic development with climate and decarbonisation goals.
He noted that the project reflects a broader global shift towards sustainable infrastructure development and energy transition strategies capable of supporting low-carbon growth.
Strengthening India-France Collaboration
Highlighting the growing strategic partnership between India and France, Mestrallet emphasised the importance of bilateral cooperation in advancing connectivity, clean energy, technology, and infrastructure initiatives.
He referred to ongoing collaborations between the two countries across sectors including energy, digital innovation, and strategic infrastructure, noting that such partnerships will play a critical role in the successful implementation of the corridor.
The summit discussions also underlined the importance of international cooperation, investment frameworks, and governance structures in enabling large-scale connectivity projects and ensuring long-term economic viability.
Building the Future of Global Connectivity
Participants at the summit discussed the next steps for the IMEC initiative, including feasibility studies, infrastructure planning, investment mobilisation, and governance mechanisms involving participating countries and stakeholders.
Industry experts noted that the corridor has the potential to significantly influence global trade routes, strengthen supply chain resilience, and support emerging clean energy ecosystems through integrated infrastructure development.
The event served as a platform for dialogue on sustainable connectivity, renewable energy partnerships, hydrogen infrastructure, and future-ready trade systems, reinforcing the growing importance of international collaboration in shaping the next phase of global economic and energy transformation.
