Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday reaffirmed India’s ambitious goal of achieving $2 trillion in exports over the next five years, saying the target is central to the country’s vision of building an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.

Speaking at a national conclave of trade leaders at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Goyal said India is steadily building a stronger domestic manufacturing ecosystem while simultaneously expanding its presence in global markets.

Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav to Promote Indigenous Products

During the event, Goyal launched the website for the upcoming Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav and expressed confidence that the initiative would create new opportunities for Indian businesses.

Scheduled to begin in 86 days at Bharat Mandapam, the fair is designed as a large-scale Swadeshi platform aimed at showcasing India-made products and services.

The event is being organized by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) in partnership with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), with support from logistics bodies, transport associations and industry organizations.

According to Goyal, nearly 1,000 businesses are expected to participate, with focus areas including:

  • Product quality
  • Packaging and branding
  • Marketing and exports
  • Import substitution initiatives

Export Momentum Continues to Grow

Highlighting India’s export performance, Goyal said the country’s exports have already reached approximately $863 billion this year, registering growth of around 5% compared to last year.

The government has now set a near-term target of achieving $1 trillion in exports while continuing to pursue broader long-term goals.

He added that the Commerce Ministry is actively working on free trade agreements with 38 countries, primarily developed economies, to provide Indian businesses better market access through lower tariffs.

The proposed trade agreement with Oman is expected to come into effect on June 1.

Focus on MSMEs and Domestic Manufacturing

Goyal stressed that the objective extends beyond export growth and also includes reducing import dependency through domestic manufacturing and import substitution.

He highlighted sectors such as:

  • Capital goods
  • Medical devices
  • Agriculture and fisheries
  • Manufacturing clusters in Rajkot, Ludhiana, Pune and Visakhapatnam

The minister noted that MSME definitions have also been revised, allowing businesses with turnover up to ₹500 crore to continue receiving support while expanding globally.

Call for Greater Inclusion and Digital Payments

Goyal also emphasized wider participation in the upcoming fair, particularly encouraging the inclusion of women entrepreneurs and younger business leaders.

He proposed inviting 25 women entrepreneurs from every state and suggested creating dedicated kiosks to promote RuPay and UPI transactions at the event.

According to him, such initiatives can help strengthen India’s movement toward a more digitally connected and self-reliant economy.

Vision for a Self-Sustaining India

Referring to Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi as examples of India’s world-class infrastructure development, Goyal said the country now has platforms capable of showcasing Indian craftsmanship and industrial capability on a global scale.

He added that while government initiatives such as Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes can provide an initial push, long-term success will depend on industry ownership and participation.

With India aiming to present itself as a stronger and more self-sustaining economy by the 80th Independence anniversary in 2027, the government sees initiatives like Bharat Vyapar Mahotsav as important steps toward achieving that vision.
