India has set an ambitious goal of achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030-31, with Union Minister Piyush Goyal calling for sharper focus on MSMEs, agriculture, logistics, and global branding to drive this growth.
Clear Roadmap for Export Growth
At a high-level review meeting, the minister outlined a structured plan to reach $1 trillion each in merchandise and services exports. The Department of Commerce has developed a sector-wise strategy covering key industries such as engineering goods, textiles, electronics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and services.
Goyal emphasised that achieving this target will require clear timelines, measurable outcomes, and strong coordination across ministries.
Focus on MSMEs and Grassroots Exporters
A major thrust of the strategy is on empowering MSMEs and first-time exporters. The government is working to ensure that export benefits reach smaller businesses through better access to finance, markets, and support systems.
Officials have been directed to strengthen outreach through Export Promotion Councils, Commodity Boards, and regional offices of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
Export Promotion Mission Gains Momentum
The Export Promotion Mission (EPM) is at the centre of this push, with multiple support measures already in place. These include:
- Interest subvention and credit support
- Export factoring and risk-sharing mechanisms
- Assistance for e-commerce exporters
- Support for testing, certification, logistics, and warehousing
The initiative is designed to reduce barriers and make exporting easier for businesses across the country.
Boosting Agriculture and Global Competitiveness
Goyal highlighted the need to expand agricultural exports and improve infrastructure such as overseas warehousing and certification systems. He also suggested identifying sectors where import substitution can complement export growth.
Building a Strong ‘Brand India’
To enhance India’s global presence, the minister stressed the importance of creating a unified “Brand India” identity. Plans are underway to develop a rolling three-year calendar of trade fairs, buyer-seller meets, and international delegations to give exporters better planning visibility.
Addressing Global Challenges
The meeting also reviewed relief measures for exporters impacted by geopolitical tensions, particularly in West Asia, ensuring that disruptions do not derail export momentum.
