Army, Navy and Air Force

The Defence Ministry of India has approved a comprehensive defence acquisition plan worth ₹79,000 crore to enhance the combat capability and operational preparedness of the country’s armed forces, officials said on Monday.

The package includes a wide range of equipment and systems across the Army, Navy and Air Force. It is aimed at modernising weaponry, improving frontline combat platforms, and strengthening strategic deterrence in the face of evolving security challenges.

As part of the procurement plan, the Army will receive upgraded artillery systems, infantry combat platforms and surveillance equipment. The Air Force is set to induct advanced avionics, radar systems and support infrastructure, while the Navy will focus on surface and subsurface capabilities to enhance maritime security.

Officials said the purchases will also support domestic defence production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with emphasis on sourcing key systems and components from Indian industry partners where feasible. This is expected to boost indigenous research, development and manufacturing in the defence sector.

A senior defence official said, “The approved acquisitions will provide our forces with modern and capable systems that strengthen readiness and operational reach, while supporting the country’s long-term self-reliance in defence technology.”

The procurement package is likely to be implemented in phases, with delivery schedules and contract awards to be finalised in consultation with the services and industry stakeholders. The government said the move underscores its focus on enhancing national security and preparing the armed forces for emerging threats.
