In alignment with the vision of a Vikasit Maharashtra — one that is inclusive, sustainable, and green — the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) is preparing to play a pivotal role in steering economic growth for the state and the nation. Following the Union Government’s announcement in the 2024 Budget to develop 14 Urban Growth Hub Cities across India, Maharashtra has taken the lead by launching this concept first in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Now, the state is replicating the model in Pune, with strong backing from NITI Aayog and the Pune International Centre (PIC).
Marking the first milestone in this transformative initiative, a Statement of Intent (SOI) was signed on 1st August 2025 in Pune between the Planning Department, Government of Maharashtra, NITI Aayog, represented by Ana Rai, and Pune International Centre. The signing ceremony was graced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, and Padma Bhushan Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, Chairman of PIC, among other dignitaries.
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), under the leadership of Yogesh Mhase, will anchor the initiative. The ambitious plan envisions transforming the PMR into a key contributor to Maharashtra’s goal of becoming a half-trillion-dollar economy by 2047, in line with the India@100 vision. By December 2025, an implementable action plan will be formulated to drive sustainable growth and employment in the region. This will include recommendations on policy reforms, incentive packages, growth drivers, and institutional frameworks.
Over the next four months, the planning process will include extensive stakeholder consultations with entrepreneurs, sectoral experts, professional bodies, and urban local authorities to co-create a robust economic master plan for the region.
