BrahMos

Lucknow, May 12, 2025 — In a landmark development for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually inaugurated the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production unit at the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UP DIC) in Lucknow on Sunday. The state-of-the-art facility, established at a cost of ₹300 crore, is projected to manufacture 80 to 100 BrahMos missiles annually, marking a significant boost in India’s strategic capabilities.

The facility, situated on an 80-hectare campus provided free of cost by the Uttar Pradesh government, will not only produce standard BrahMos missiles—with a range of 290 to 400 km and top speeds of Mach 2.8—but also next-generation variants. These advanced missiles, weighing significantly less at 1,290 kg, will offer enhanced agility and a strike range of over 300 km. Production is expected to commence swiftly, with deliveries targeted within the next 12 months.

The inauguration was part of a broader event that included the launch of the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility. This dedicated centre will manage the final assembly and rigorous testing of the missile systems. The project, initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2018 announcement of the Defence Industrial Corridor, underscores India’s commitment to defence self-reliance and indigenisation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who attended the ceremony in person, lauded the initiative as a transformative leap for the state’s industrial and defence sectors. He described the Lucknow node’s BrahMos unit as the “jewel in the crown” of the UP DIC, positioning the state capital among an elite group of cities globally with indigenous cruise missile manufacturing capabilities.

In addition to the BrahMos unit, several other high-tech defence manufacturing units were inaugurated. These include an Aerospace Precision Casting Plant, an Aerospace Forge Shop and Mill Products Plant, and a Strategic Powder Metallurgy Facility, which will be India’s first to produce titanium and super alloy metal powders indigenously. The Aerospace Precision Machining Shop was also introduced to support ultra-fine machining of jet engine components.

The launch event further featured the foundation laying of the Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS), designed to provide certification and testing services for defence equipment. The Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant (Strategic Materials Technology Complex) was also inaugurated, underlining the corridor’s emphasis on self-reliant and advanced manufacturing.

The BrahMos project is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. Established in 1998, BrahMos Aerospace was India’s first major defence collaboration with a foreign government, with 50.5% Indian and 49.5% Russian ownership.

To support the growing workforce needs, the BrahMos unit has recruited 36 trainee technicians, each offered a monthly stipend of ₹30,000. At the event, CM Adityanath handed out appointment letters to select recruits, highlighting the project’s employment generation potential. With ₹900 crore worth of missile production expected over the next 5–7 years, the Lucknow facility signifies a strategic turning point in India’s defence manufacturing narrative.
