ODOP Exhibition

The Mahakumbh 2025, currently underway in Prayagraj, provides a remarkable platform for artisans from across India to showcase their craft under the ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) initiative. Spread across 6,000 square meters, the exhibition celebrates India’s diverse handicrafts and cottage industries. With an estimated business opportunity of around ₹35 crores, this event is expected to benefit artisans and entrepreneurs significantly.

The exhibition features an impressive array of products, including carpets, zari-zardosi, glass toys from Firozabad, and wooden toys from Varanasi. These unique items have become major attractions for devotees and visitors attending the Mahakumbh.

Boosting Artisanal Economy and Employment

Sharad Tandon, Joint Commissioner of Industries for the Prayagraj Division, highlighted the transformative potential of the event. Drawing comparisons to the 2019 Kumbh Mela, which generated a business of ₹4.30 crores, Tandon emphasized that the projected ₹35-crore revenue this year marks a significant leap. He expressed optimism that the event would open new avenues for business and employment, bolstering the local economy and fostering innovation.

Flipkart’s Role in Empowering Entrepreneurs

E-commerce giant Flipkart has also set up a stall at the exhibition, enabling artisans to sell their products on its platform at no cost. The stall has attracted considerable attention, with a steady influx of buyers and visitors keen on supporting local craftsmanship. This initiative underscores the growing importance of digital platforms in promoting traditional industries.

Showcasing GI Products and Regional Crafts

The ODOP exhibition highlights the rich cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh, showcasing 75 Geographical Indication (GI) products, with 34 items hailing from the Kashi region. According to GI expert Dr Rajnikant, the exhibition includes iconic products such as Banarasi sarees, red chillies from Varanasi, Surkha guava, Amla from Pratapgarh, brass utensils from Mirzapur, and terracotta items from Gorakhpur. Unique creations like Banarasi Thandai, Lal Peda, Banarasi Tabla, and wall paintings are also being promoted for global recognition.

Artisans from Kushinagar and Firozabad have presented an array of exquisite crafts, including carpets, glass toys, and utensils, which have garnered widespread admiration. These efforts align with the ODOP scheme’s goal of boosting local economies by promoting region-specific crafts on national and international stages.
