Karnataka plans to extend AI training in government schools to Class 6.

Karnataka is considering extending artificial intelligence (AI) training in government schools to Class 6 students, as the state looks to introduce AI education earlier.

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar directed officials on Monday to work with the Information Technology department and private companies to expand the programme. AI training has already begun for Class 9 students in government schools, and officials have now been asked to work towards extending it to Class 6.

Officials issued the directions during a review meeting on the government’s 100-day programmes, recruitments, and priority schemes.

Google Interested in AI Training Programme:

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, Google has expressed interest in providing AI training in government schools. Officials have been asked to study the company’s initiatives in Telangana before developing a similar programme for Karnataka.

The Chief Minister also directed officials to identify land for a proposed AI university in the state.

Meanwhile, the government is preparing to recruit 956 teachers on an outsourcing basis.

Plans for Karnataka Public Schools:

The review meeting also covered the proposed development of 1,000 Karnataka Public Schools (KPS). Officials have been directed to complete preparations for laying foundation stones by November 14.

Deputy commissioners have been authorised to approve detailed project reports and tenders for the schools. The government also plans to develop 100 KPS schools through corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, with companies already expressing interest in developing 60 schools.

Government Schools to Connect Students with Agriculture:

As part of another initiative, Class 9 and 11 students from 941 urban government schools will visit progressive farmers’ fields.

The programme is expected to include overnight stays in villages, with officials asked to make arrangements in community halls and hostels. Private schools will also be required to implement the programme, which is scheduled to be completed by December.

AI and Digital Tools in Agriculture:

The review also covered the CM Raitha Chaitanya Agritech Mission. Shivakumar said that 25 lakh SMS messages had already been sent to farmers under the initiative.

Officials were asked to send video messages explaining the scheme in simple language. A chatbot is also being integrated into the programme, while preparations are underway to invite tenders for drone- and satellite-based crop estimation and digital crop surveys.
