Driving The Future of Road Safety Through AI: Smart Mobility & Data-Driven Policing

As Punjab embraces technology-driven policing, digital innovations such as AI, intelligent traffic systems, and data analytics are strengthening road safety and improving traffic management across the state. Shri Amardeep Singh Rai, IPS, Special Director General of Police, Traffic & Road Safety, Government of Punjab, in an exclusive interaction with Sahaj Anand and Anandasri Talukdar of Elets News Network (ENN), discusses Punjab Police’s digital transformation, smart mobility initiatives, and the future of technology-led road safety in India. With technology becoming a key enabler in public safety, how is Punjab Police adopting digital solutions, AI-based systems, and data- driven approaches to improve traffic management and road safety?

Punjab Police has transitioned from traditional policing to an advanced, technology-driven enforcement ecosystem. Our primary digital intervention has been the establishment of AI-powered traffic management mechanisms. We are actively deploying Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) systems across major junctions to automate monitoring and optimise traffic flow.

Furthermore, our data-driven approach relies on predictive analytics to identify high-risk corridors. By leveraging historical accident data and real-time inputs, we can deploy personnel dynamically, ensuring that technology acts as a force multiplier to proactively secure our roads.


Road safety requires both enforcement and behavioural change. What initiatives are being implemented to reduce accidents and promote responsible road usage among citizens?

Achieving a sustainable reduction in road fatalities requires a dual strategy: zero-tolerance enforcement and empathetic civic engagement.


  • The Sadak Surakhiya Force (SSF): A dedicated, highly visible highway patrolling wing equipped with modern interceptors and recovery vehicles. The SSF has significantly reduced response times and institutionalised disciplined driving behaviour across state highways.
  • Targeted Enforcement: We take strict action against high-risk violations such as overspeeding, drunken driving, and the non-use of safety gear.
  • Behavioural and Educational Campaigns: We actively collaborate with educational institutions, civil society organisations, and religious bodies to instil a culture of road safety at the grassroots Our focus is on shifting public perception so that traffic compliance is viewed as a life-saving habit rather than a legal burden.

Smart mobility is shaping the future of cities. How can technologies such as intelligent traffic systems, automated enforcement, and real-time monitoring help build safer transportation networks?

Smart mobility is the backbone of modern urban planning. Technologies such as Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) reduce human error and subjectivity in traffic regulation.

  • Automated Enforcement: Systems like speed cameras and smart e-challaning ensure round-the-clock surveillance, creating a strong psychological deterrent against reckless driving.
  • Real-Time Monitoring and Adaptive Signals: By using dynamic signal timings based on real-time vehicle density, we can significantly reduce congestion. Reduced congestion directly correlates with lower commuter frustration, fewer erratic manoeuvres, and a noticeable reduction in congestion-related accidents.
  • Integrated Command Centres: Centralising this data allows us to view the entire urban transportation network as a living ecosystem, enabling instant operational adjustments and more effective traffic management.

Data plays a crucial role in modern policing. How is traffic data being utilised for better planning, accident prevention, and improving emergency response mechanisms?

Data is the single most valuable asset in modern traffic management. We utilise it across three critical pillars.

  • Accident Prevention through Blackspot Mapping: By analysing spatial and temporal data, we scientifically identify and map accident This enables us to coordinate with engineering departments to rectify structural road defects and improve road safety.
  • Optimising the ‘Golden Hour’: Data analytics help us map accident-prone zones against the nearest trauma care facilities. This ensures that emergency response teams, particularly the SSF, can reach victims and provide medical intervention within the critical Golden Hour, significantly improving survival rates.
  • Strategic Planning: Long-term traffic trend analysis guides our infrastructure proposals, ensuring that future road designs adequately accommodate growing vehicular volumes.

Creating safer roads requires collaboration between multiple stakeholders. How can government          departments, technology companies, and citizens work together to strengthen road safety?

Road safety cannot be achieved by the police in isolation; it requires a strong multi-stakeholder coalition.

  • Government Inter-Departmental Synergy: Close coordination between the Police, Transport Department, Health Department, and road authorities such as NHAI and PWD ensures that enforcement, engineering, and emergency care function in tandem.
  • Public-Private Technology Partnerships: We look to technology partners and startups to provide localised AI solutions, geographic information mapping, and advanced data analytics tools tailored to India’s unique traffic conditions.
  • Citizen Ownership: Ultimately, success depends on active community participation. By creating transparent feedback mechanisms through which citizens can report hazards, traffic violations, and infrastructure gaps, we can transform road safety from a governance mandate into a shared civic responsibility.

Digital transformation is reshaping governance and citizen services. How do you envision digital innovation contributing to the next generation of traffic management and road safety solutions in India?

The next generation of traffic management in India will be defined by connectivity, automation, and predictive governance.

Looking ahead, we envision the integration of Connected Vehicle Technology (V2X), where infrastructure communicates directly with vehicles to warn drivers about upcoming hazards, adverse weather conditions, or traffic congestion. Furthermore, integrating national logistics frameworks such as PM Gati Shakti will enable better alignment between macro-level freight movement and regional traffic planning, reducing friction between commercial and commuter traffic.
