In a major step towards modernising railway infrastructure and improving operational efficiency, Indian Railways has approved projects worth ₹895.30 crore. The investment focuses on enhancing power systems for Kolkata Metro and strengthening critical bridge infrastructure in West Bengal, aiming to improve safety, reliability, and capacity.
Big Push for Kolkata Metro Capacity
A significant portion of the investment—₹671.72 crore—has been allocated to upgrade the North–South Corridor of Kolkata Metro.
Key upgrades include:
- Installation of 7 new traction substations
- Upgradation of Auxiliary Substations (ASS) and Traction Substations (TSS)
- Enhancement of power supply from 11 KV to 33 KV systems
- Strengthening power infrastructure between Esplanade and Kavi Subhash sections
Originally designed in the 1980s for train intervals of around five minutes, the metro system has struggled to keep up with rising passenger demand. With the new upgrades, train frequency is expected to improve significantly, enabling operations at 2.5-minute intervals.
The project will also address maintenance challenges caused by ageing infrastructure and limited availability of spare parts, ensuring smoother and more reliable metro services.
Strengthening Critical Bridge Infrastructure
In addition to metro upgrades, ₹223.58 crore has been approved for rebuilding key bridge infrastructure in the Adra Division under South Eastern Railway.
The project includes:
- Reconstruction of Bridge No. 520 (UP & DN) between Madhukunda and Damodar
- Yard remodelling and track improvements
- Strengthening of foundation and substructure of ageing bridge components
The existing bridge, originally built in 1903 (DN line) and 1965 (UP line), has shown signs of structural stress. Its redevelopment is critical for maintaining safety on a high-density route connecting Asansol and Tatanagar.
Boost to Freight and Industrial Connectivity
The upgraded bridge section is part of a crucial coal corridor and Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) feeder route. It supports heavy industrial movement across the Durgapur–Asansol belt, including major plants like IISCO, ACC, and thermal power units.
Improved infrastructure is expected to:
- Enhance freight movement efficiency
- Reduce operational risks
- Support industrial growth in the region
Towards a Modern Rail Network
These projects highlight Indian Railways’ continued focus on building a modern, high-capacity, and safe transport system. While the Kolkata Metro upgrades will improve commuter experience and reduce congestion, the bridge redevelopment will strengthen freight logistics and industrial connectivity.
