Kandla Connectivity

In a move set to ease cargo movement and strengthen India’s port infrastructure, the government has approved a ₹132.51 crore project for the construction of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla.

The project, cleared by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, is part of the larger vision to modernise port connectivity under flagship initiatives like the Sagarmala Programme and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. These initiatives aim to create seamless, multi-modal transport networks that can support India’s growing trade and logistics demands.

The proposed ROB will be built at a key railway crossing (LC-235), where congestion has long slowed down the movement of cargo. Once completed, the bridge is expected to eliminate this bottleneck, allowing smoother and faster transit of goods to and from the port.

Officials say the project will directly improve operational efficiency at Deendayal Port, one of India’s major maritime gateways. With reduced waiting time and better traffic flow, businesses dependent on port logistics are likely to benefit from quicker cargo evacuation and lower delays.

The construction work is being carried out by Western Railway on a deposit basis, ensuring technical expertise and coordination in execution. The project has also been reviewed by the Delegated Investment Board to ensure it meets modern safety and engineering standards.

Speaking on the development, Minister Sonowal highlighted that such infrastructure projects are not just about building roads or bridges, but about strengthening the entire logistics chain. He emphasised that improved connectivity will enhance trade efficiency, reduce congestion, and support economic growth.

The government is also pushing for better planning and coordination by integrating such projects into the PM Gati Shakti portal. This will allow different agencies to work in sync, ensuring faster execution and better outcomes.

For the region and the country, the project represents more than just a bridge—it’s a step toward building smarter, faster, and more efficient infrastructure that keeps pace with India’s economic ambitions.
