NTPC, EDF

In a move that signals India’s growing focus on clean and reliable energy, NTPC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France’s Électricité de France (EDF) to explore collaboration in nuclear power development.

The agreement, though non-binding, sets the stage for both organisations to jointly study the feasibility of building nuclear power projects in India. It was signed after receiving approvals from relevant government authorities, reflecting the strategic importance of the initiative.

As part of the collaboration, NTPC and EDF will evaluate the potential use of EDF’s advanced European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology and assess how it can be adapted to India’s requirements. The partnership will also look into key aspects such as cost viability, tariff structures, localisation opportunities, and identification of suitable project sites.

Beyond technology and infrastructure, the focus will also be on people. Both sides plan to work on specialised training programmes to build skilled human resources, ensuring that India has the expertise needed to support its nuclear energy ambitions.

For NTPC, this step is part of a broader transition. Traditionally known for its thermal power generation, the company is steadily diversifying into cleaner energy sources. With an installed capacity of over 89 GW and ambitious plans to reach 149 GW by 2032—including a significant share from renewables—NTPC is positioning itself as a future-ready energy player.

The company has also been expanding into areas like green hydrogen, battery storage, e-mobility, and waste-to-energy, underlining its commitment to sustainability.

This partnership with EDF reflects a larger vision—strengthening India’s energy security while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. As the country moves towards a cleaner energy mix, nuclear power is expected to play an important role in providing stable and low-carbon electricity.

With global expertise and domestic capability coming together, the collaboration could mark an important step in shaping India’s next phase of energy growth.
