In a step towards making India’s highways safer and more resilient, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to integrate advanced weather intelligence into highway planning and operations.

The agreement was signed in the presence of NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav and IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, along with senior officials from both organisations.
The collaboration aims to bring real-time weather data and impact-based forecasts into the way highways are designed, built, and managed. By using early warning systems and continuous monitoring, authorities will be better equipped to handle extreme weather conditions such as heavy rainfall, fog, storms, or heatwaves.

For commuters, this could translate into safer travel conditions, fewer disruptions, and quicker response during emergencies. For infrastructure planners, it means being able to design roads that can better withstand changing climate patterns.

Officials say the initiative will help NHAI make more informed decisions—whether it’s planning construction timelines, managing traffic during adverse weather, or protecting highway assets from damage.
Beyond immediate safety, the partnership reflects a larger shift towards building climate-resilient infrastructure. As weather patterns become more unpredictable, integrating scientific data into infrastructure planning is becoming increasingly important.
