India’s defence electronics major Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with space technology firm Bellatrix Aerospace to collaborate on the design, development, and manufacturing of advanced satellite systems and payloads.
The partnership brings together BEL’s expertise in mission-critical defence electronics and Bellatrix Aerospace’s capabilities in satellite propulsion and advanced space subsystems. Together, the two organisations aim to develop next-generation satellite platforms specifically designed for Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) operations.
Strengthening India’s Space Technology Capabilities
The collaboration is expected to enhance India’s indigenous capabilities in satellite technology, particularly in the emerging VLEO segment. Satellites operating in Very Low Earth Orbit offer several advantages, including improved imaging resolution and faster data communication, but they also require specialised technologies due to the challenging environment at such altitudes.
By combining their technological strengths, BEL and Bellatrix Aerospace aim to create integrated satellite solutions that can support both strategic and civilian space missions.
Collaboration Between Defence PSU and Deep-Tech Startup
BEL, a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has decades of experience in developing sophisticated electronics and payload systems for defence and strategic applications. Bellatrix Aerospace, on the other hand, is known for its innovations in satellite propulsion technologies and space systems.
BEL said that collaborations with emerging deep-tech startups are essential to accelerate innovation and strengthen India’s growing space ecosystem.
Opening New Opportunities in VLEO Space Missions
Commenting on the partnership, Rohan M. Ganapathy, CEO and CTO of Bellatrix Aerospace, highlighted the potential of Very Low Earth Orbit missions.
He noted that VLEO represents a new frontier for high-performance satellite operations, but it requires specialised technologies designed to withstand the unique challenges of operating at such low altitudes.
