The Government of India has appointed Ravi Ranjan as the Managing Director of State Bank of India (SBI) according to an official order issued this week. SBI is headquartered in Mumbai and is India’s largest public sector bank.
Ravi Ranjan takes charge following the completion of the tenure of the previous managing director. He brings decades of experience within SBI, having served in several senior roles across key banking functions.
During his career, Ranjan has handled responsibilities in areas such as corporate banking, international operations, risk management, and large account oversight. His appointment is seen as part of the government’s effort to ensure leadership continuity at the bank amid a focus on credit growth, asset quality, and regulatory compliance.
State Bank of India plays a central role in India’s banking system, with a wide domestic and international presence and a significant share in retail and corporate lending.

An official familiar with the appointment said, “Ravi Ranjan’s experience across multiple banking verticals will support the bank’s operational and strategic priorities.”
With the new managing director assuming charge, SBI’s leadership team is expected to continue its focus on strengthening core banking operations and supporting the country’s financial and economic objectives.
