Former UP DGP Appointed Chairman of Education Service Selection Commission

Former Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar has been appointed as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), according to an official notification issued on December 17, 2025.

The appointment was approved by Governor Anandiben Patel and comes amid prolonged delays in teacher recruitment and examinations conducted by the commission. The UPESSC is headquartered in Prayagraj and is responsible for selecting faculty for higher education institutions across the state.

Prashant Kumar, a retired Indian Police Service officer, previously served as the state’s DGP and held several senior administrative positions during his career. His appointment marks a shift in leadership as the commission looks to restore operational stability.

The post had remained vacant for several months following administrative and legal challenges that affected the functioning of the commission. Several recruitment drives and examinations were put on hold during this period.

An official familiar with the matter said, “The appointment is expected to help the commission resume pending selection processes and improve coordination with the state government.”

With the new chairman assuming charge, the Education Service Selection Commission is expected to restart delayed recruitments and announce examination schedules in the coming weeks.
