B Sairam

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended B Sairam, current Chairman and Managing Director of Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), as the next Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Limited (CIL). The recommendation was announced on Saturday after PESB interviewed 11 candidates, including the CMDs of Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Ltd (MECL) and Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), another Coal India subsidiary.

Sairam, with over 34 years of experience in the coal sector, has held key positions including Director (Technical) at CCL and Executive Director at Coal India. His expertise spans mine planning, expansion, operations, sustainable mining, logistics, digitisation, and regulatory affairs.

The new leadership comes at a critical time, as Coal India is under pressure to enhance domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. The company has set an ambitious target of producing 875 million tonnes of coal in 2025-26, with a dispatch target of 900 MT, compared to 781.07 MT produced in 2024-25.

The appointment process will proceed through formal approvals, with Sairam likely to succeed P M Prasad, who retires on October 31.

Coal India, which contributes over 80 percent of the country’s coal output, is ramping up production and improving coal evacuation to meet the rising energy demand of a rapidly growing economy.
